Retirement living has several options available to choose from, as is only evident from a few searches on the internet. When you’re ready to retire, you’ll find there’s no dearth of great places to go and people to meet. You will never run out of entertaining things to see and do. It’s just the beginning of some really great times ahead. And considering your needs and personal requirements, you will find a large number of satisfying options at your disposal. And if you’re planning on relocating, a new climate is always a nice decision.

Popular Retirement Options
If you’re well off, then the number of choices you have substantially increase. There are many retirement areas which have impressive recreational facilities, allowing for sports like golf, tennis and even more aggressive sports like racquet ball. And generally, the cost for playing these sports is included in the overall fee for the staying in the retirement home.

•	San Miguel de Allende is a very popular spot for Americans and Canadians who seek to retire. It’s an old town with plenty of restaurants, terraces and a huge plaza. Activities such as photography, painting and cooking are held. Location wise, it is around 40 miles from Queretaro. Queretaro is the closest airport to the United States, with daily service as well.

•	Lake Chapala is yet another beautiful spot, around 20 miles southeast from Guadalajara. Guadalajara is incidentally Mexico’s second largest city. Lake Chapala consists of scenic little getaway towns like Chapala, Ajijic and San Antonio Tlayacapan.

Mexico is very popular when it comes to retirees because of the perfect combination of great climate, superior cost of living, a very relaxing lifestyle and friendly people. The number of retirees currently residing in Mexico is over 500,000. Mexico is a very sought after area when it comes to being a retirement hub.

•	Many retirees prefer a city locale, which is more easily relatable and which has plenty of different expatriates. There are museums, cultural events, restaurants and several other highlights. On the other hand, many retirees instead opt for a smaller town instead. Smaller towns have a lower population, less traffic, and more scenic beauty. A small town feel is sometimes preferred over cities when it comes to the retirees.

Certain other factors to be kept in mind include real estate, immigration, insurance and banking. It’s normal for people to feel a little apprehensive and confused when they are resettling in such a drastically new place, especially since there’s the matter of a new language. But all of this also adds to the charm of the place. When all these options have been settled, you’ll find Mexico an experience unlike any other. But before making the decision to move there, a thorough assessment needs to be made, since you’ll be coming from a comparatively faster paced hectic life and might find the new ways of life confusing at first. Mexican lifestyle is leisurely and their rich cultural heritage and their relaxed approach to living has managed to make people fall in love with it.

Retirement is a time to relax and indulge in pleasures that one did not have the time or opportunity for when he or she was busy earning a living and supporting a family. Therefore, a country like Mexico is the ideal destination for retirement with its low costs of living and vibrant lifestyles.

Retirement homes are places where retired individuals go to live their life at when they have no job and a lot of time to kill. Although there are many people living together (which makes for good companionship) retirement communities are better in comparison to them. This is because one has a lot of luxuries at these communities which include game parlors, sports clubs, swimming pools, entertainment arenas and many other advantages offered to retired individuals.

You can choose from three genres of retirement communities depending on your interests and requirements as a senior citizen:

Active Retirement Communities
This community is for those senior citizens who are fit by health and don’t require severe medical attention on a regular basis. Their general health is in excellent condition. They might require occasional treatments for specific purposes for which there are hospitals and health care units located close to the community.

Supportive Retirement Communities
These communities have their own medical staff working round the clock for the occupants of the community. These retired individuals are not in the fittest of conditions as far as medical health is concerned. Therefore, they need extra care and attention and this should be available whenever required.

Active cum Supportive Retirement Communities
These retirement communities fuse the best of both worlds associated with Active and Supportive Retirement communities and provide the benefits of both genres to its members.

Retirement communities can be quite entertaining, especially when you share living space with individuals who also have a lot of time to spare and are looking to try different things and have as much fun as they can.

Lake Chapala
•	Located on the west side of Guadalajara is the second biggest city of Mexico, Lake Chapala.

•	Retired individuals who choose to live here are a stone’s throw away (45 minutes by road to be exact) from the airport, museums and hospitals, not to mention exciting nightclubs, pubs, restaurants and shopping marts.

•	The low cost of living in this city makes it an even better destination for retirement.

•	The majority of the residents and locals here are able to communicate fluently in English. Therefore, you don’t need to worry about the language barrier. However, if you want to experience their culture and lifestyle truly then you should pick up on the Spanish language.

If you want something even better and personal for living during your retired life you can always purchase a timeshare resale which will give you access to live there from 50 to 99 years. This time period can be extended if required as well. Most of these timeshare resale places have fantastic surroundings and all the modern social benefits located nearby.

Why choose Mexico as a Place for Retirement?

There are quite a few interesting cities and towns in Mexico that can be chosen for the ideal retirement destination for those who are willing to explore different lifestyle than the one they have being living their entire life till now.

•	There are quiet places where one can relax and not have a care in the world. Hospitable people, excellent cuisine and beautiful surrounding make the places in this country worth choosing for a retirement destination.

•	However, if you are one for the noise and people then too you have a wide range of choices from the many cities that sport the urban bustle and collaborate the cultural and historical aspect of the region perfectly with it.

Pueblo
Pueblo is a very good choice as a city for retirement. The city is steeped in 16th and 17th century architecture that dates back to the pre-Columbian era. The Latin-American culture is very much present in the present day and age and this is reflected in the abundant universities, colleges, commercial places and restaurants that not only serve traditional cuisine but also international spreads.

Pueblo is known for its ancient art of pottery known as talavera. It is also full of museums which are proof of the cultural aspect of the city. The city boasts of being the mole of Mexico as far as cuisine is concerned. In 1862 the French people were defeated by the Mexican soldiers in this city which has given the city the name of “Cinco de Mayo”.

Mexican Riviera
The city of Ensenada in Baja California along with Puerto Escondido and that of Oaxaca’s Huatulco outline the Mexican Riviera. This destination is also blessed with more than a thousand miles of the Pacific coastline on its west, making it one picturesque retirement destination in Mexico.

In addition to the coastline the Sierra Madre Mountains also border this city which makes the place even more beautiful. It was named Mexican Riviera by American cruises which passed its shores. Now it has become the fourth most popular beach vacation destinations in the world with more than 300 cruises stopping at its coast every year with tourists from all over the world.

Unfortunately only 10% of the area of this city is accessible to tourists. The rest of it is deemed “ejido”.

Since the land here is primarily used for cultivation and farming from the time that it was handed over during the Mexican Revolution, most of it still falls out of regulations and private ownerships.

A small part of the land is allowed for foreigners to own as “excritura” in accordance with a 50 year bank trust.

If you want to experience the rich culture of the Spanish natives who live here and absorb their delicious cuisine, melodious music and beautiful people, then Mexico is the place for you to be once you retire from your job.

You will definitely enjoy the fruits and vegetables that are fresh and delicious, unlike the packed ones that you find in the colder regions. Living expenses are much lower in the cities of Mexico which makes retired life a blessing for all.

A lot of people consider their retired lives as the “golden years” of their lifetime. Retirement brings with it all kinds of fun, excitement and adventure despite the lack of a regular flow of income or a constant depreciation of one’s health. This is the time when senior citizens enjoy their moments of solitude by spending time with their family, friends and loved ones.

Socialization with professional colleagues and worries about work deadlines take a backseat as new horizons open up and possibilities start to crop up in life. Most retired individuals take up various hobbies that they could never pursue while they were working primarily due to the lack of time.

There are quite a few exciting prospects available as far as retirement locations are concerned. Some of the most beautiful ones can be found in Mexico.

What makes Puerto Vallarta a popular destination in Mexico?

This Mexican fishing village is located at the base of the Sierra Madre Mountains on Banderas Bay is no longer the quiet little village with a small population that is was a few decades back.

The film “The Night of the Iguana” (1963) put this village on the map as a popular retirement and tourist destinations for people from all over the world.
The population has expanded tremendously and it now makes greater PV second to the largest populated city in Mexico.

Mexican president Vicente Fox of the National Action Party used his expert economic knowledge and business skills that he achieved from Harvard University to make Mexico a hub for commercial and economic prosperity. He was the only president to have succeeded in preventing an economic depression that the country faced with most of its presidents prior to Fox’s term. The peso has now gained value against the dollar at 10.8 pesos per unit of the U.S currency.

A lot of American tourists who visit Puerto Vallarta for the first time discover paradise in Mexico. They never want to leave it. This experience makes the village a top choice for retirement in future. A lot of these tourists hire condominiums during their initial visits and check out the benefits of this service available for them by the Mexican Tourism. There are villas available for saying as well which are very popular among tourists.

Once they have decided how to live in the village the tourists want to fix Puerto Vallarta their permanent residence after retirement. Some also choose it to be part time retirement destinations for themselves.

Some luxuries and services offered along with these condos and villas for tourists are constant during certain times of the year. The weather during the period between November and May is excellent for vacations. It is an ideal destination to sit back and relax while catching up with friends or making new ones with the locals who are very welcoming to foreigners.

These villas and condos offer mesmerizing views of the Banderas Bay which makes the place irresistible for visitors.

For citizens of USA and Canada, retiring to Mexico has slowly become one of the most popular forms of retirement from their jobs. Baby Boomers everywhere have identified retiring to Mexico as the best step to take. Their friends and relatives have done the same. But before actually taking the big step, one has to know all the technicalities, such as where to retire to, and which locations are most economically viable and which places have the most number of amenities? Mexico after all, might seem to be an alien place and its best to do one’s research first.

Ajijic Real Estate

The United Mexican States, also known as Mexico, is this popular to retirees because it has the best retirement deals for foreign retirees. Ajijic Real Estate in Mexico could be just what you’re looking for. It has already proved to be the right choice for baby boomers who thought they’d have to put their retirement plans on hold. Ajijic homes have shot up quality wise and their sales are extremely good, considering the deplorable state of the global economy in other sections of the world. Ajijic realty is slowly transforming from a seller’s market to a buyer’s market.

When it comes to selling property the Ajijic way, a delayed market reaction is guaranteed. Ajijic real estate also seems to operate in a separate reality, but it has some seriously good deals as well.

Popular Tourist Spots

Mazatlan, Acapulco, and Playa del Carmen are popular tourist spots and generally consist of an extremely high standard of living. The ocean air in these parts is very calming and good for the body. This is a good getaway for those who wish to be ‘far from the madding crowd’. Rocky point and San Felipe are great places to stay in as they are extremely close to the United States and hence are great choices for destinations to retire to in Mexico.

Americans, Canadians and also Europeans consider Mexico to be the place of choice for retirement destinations because it offers value for money, scenic beauty, a great climate and lots of leisure activities to boot. All of these reasons have prompted people to buy their retirement property in Mexico. Another factor is the easy travel between Mexico and the US borders and their close proximity. The crime rates are several notches lower compared to the US, and the happiness index higher.

Apart from its excellent climate, history, heritage, architecture and food, there are several more reasons to retire to Mexico. Cabo San Lucas is very popular because of its large marina and beautiful bay which remains a popular port of call for cruise ships and a favorite for anglers everywhere. Cabo is also know for its nightlife, but its small town feel is still undiminished.

All these reasons prove why Mexico is soon turning out to be the place of choice when it comes to retirement. It has several amenities and a leisurely way of life, perfect for those looking to turn a new page in their lives, right after retirement.

Mexico is one of the best places to retire to when you are tired of working day in and out. It covers a vast expanse, nearly two million kilometers, and therefore offers a wide variety of environments to one who chooses to stay in Mexico.

This guide will help you to zero in on the place that will suit you best after your retirement, as well as places that you would like to visit sometime in the future. The place you choose to settle down in must suit your temperament, and this is exactly what Mexico offers! Here are a few suggestions that can help you make the right choice.

There are many big cities in Mexico, and for the die hard urbanite, these cities ranks amongst the topmost.

Guadalajara- this includes the Lake Chapala and Ajijic. This city is the scene of a number of emigrants from other countries! Their society is located alongside the aforementioned lakes, which are situated at a forty minutes’ drive from the centre of the city. At Guadalajara, you can access all the comforts of a modern society. It is the second largest city in Mexico and offers daily direct flights to USA.

Mexico City is obviously the scene of most activity, and is home to the highest number of refugees, emigrants and retirees. There is an inherent charm about the city which will not let you stay away for long. People who have opted to stay back cannot quite explain their decision, but the truth remains that Mexico City is a highly interesting and vibrant place to be in. A wide variety of people live in Mexico City, introducing you an interesting array of cultural experiences that have survived for over 600 years!

If the aforementioned cities do not suit your taste, you could also choose any one of the colonial cities mushrooming across the country of Mexico. You could opt to live in places like San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Queretaro or Veracruz. Let us see in details what each city has to offer to a retiree.

San Miguel de Allende: Once upon a time it was a scenic, quiet place, exuding calm and warmth. It was because of being such a quaint little hide-away that its popularity rocketed in the 1960s and 70s. Now it is one of the most popular tourist areas in Mexico.

Guanajuato: This city is situated quite close to the city of San Miguel and is a melting pot of various cultural influences! This is perhaps one of the reasons why Guanajuato is considered one of the most beautiful colonial cities in Mexico.

Queretaro: Situated to the north of Mexico City, it has imbibed the charm of Mexico City quite neatly. One can simply drive here from Mexico City for a little peace. This city is quite popular with those who prefer to live in a pristine surrounding, yet be able to access the modern amenities a city has to offer.

Veracruz: this is a port city and an industrial one at that. As with most Mexican cities, this city has a color and charm of its own, primarily because here both Caribbean and Mexican culture merge to give rise to something unique!

Mexico is an ideal place for retirement; however, you need to brush up on your Spanish speaking skills if you want to reside here.

Baja California as a tourist spot in Mexico

With recent developments in the economy and the Mexican Tourism improving their offers to visitors, the city of Baja California is fast becoming one of the most sought after tourist destinations of the Americans. Those who have already visited the place are in love with it and quickly decide to live here after retirement. Not only is the surrounding environment beautiful and exciting, the cost of living here is also quite low compared to that in America. Therefore, Americans living here are able to afford much more in their daily life than they were in their native country.

Baja California has been the party capital of Mexico for quite some time now. A lot of couples prefer to visit this place during their honeymoon to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and the recently available modern luxuries that every tourist wishes to experience. Young people also love to spend time here during their spring breaks in the sun kissed beaches and party at night at the posh clubs in the city.

Baja California as a Retirement Destination

Here are some of the reasons why retirement is attractive in Baja California

Since this city is very close to the southern border of the U.S. it enjoys the beautiful view of the beach along with the comfortable California weather at the same time. Due to these and many other attractions Baja California is also becoming popular among the senior citizens as an ideal place to live after retirement.

The welcoming attitude of the locals and their hospitable nature makes social life quite enjoyable. A

dded to that there are plenty of commercial opportunities waiting to be exploited by more people.

The cost of living in the city is much lower compared to that in any part of America. This means that retired persons can enjoy a considerably higher standard of living here.

The real estate scene in Baja California is slowly approaching a great boon. Non Mexicans are now allowed to buy property in the city. In addition to this advantage, many of the land areas which were previously unavailable to foreigners have now been opened up for investment by them. This, coupled with the depressed real estate market in America makes Baja California a lucrative possibility for retired individuals to enjoy the beauty of the place and make some extra dough in the process as well.

Foreigners are now allowed to buy property on the basis of the system of Fideicomiso which is a bank trust scheme. All this adds to the attraction of retiring in Baja California for many people. The low expenses of living and the friendly behavior of the locals are very inviting for those who are looking to spend their retired life in peace and tranquility. The weather is a perfect blend of the beach sun and warm southern Californian climate.

Senior citizens can enjoy a lot of luxuries with the lower costs of products in the economy. This may have not been possible had they lived in America. The tourism industry has also come up with some very comfortable and affordable hotels and restaurants that invite guests from all over the world.

Retiring to Mexico is an option many a person has in mind when they start thinking about retiring and settling down someplace comfortable and yet inexpensive. Mexico is a beautiful place full of scenic beauty and yet, is not very expensive at all, especially in comparison to places like United States and Canada. It is the place of choice for those seeking a great place to retire to and resettle in because, among other reasons, it is extremely affordable and offers value for money when it comes to your retirement income.

•	If you’re on the lookout for retirement communities in Mexico, you’ll have plenty of choices. Several of these turn out to be time-share resales, which might just be your cup of tea, if you’re planning on something that is part time. When it comes to Americans, resettling in Mexico is not a new trend. They have been doing so for many years and this is primarily because Mexico is not very far away from America, and it is affordable, scenic and has a lovely climate. The place has a very rich cultural heritage and is known to be foreigner friendly and very hospitable. So, if you’re looking to move to Mexico as well, your decision should be lauded. And there is a lot of information at your disposal if you want to take advantage of everything there is to enjoy in Mexico.

•	Americans have flooded Mexico in every region possible, from cities to beach resorts, colonial towns to fishing villages. There are a few areas however which seem to bring in more people than others. They include Guadalajara and Lake Chapala, which consist of a large number of North American retirement communities. The services and facilities are also in English. Cuernavaca, also called “Land of Eternal Spring” and Mexico City are the other main hot spots. San Miguel de Allende, or The San Francisco of Mexico, is another clear favourite among Americans for its arty atmosphere. Merida and Oaxaca, although situated farther off, also have many expatriates.

•	The retirement options are many and diverse. During winter, many go for the relatively warmer climates south of the border. Some take six month tourist visas every year to come stay. Some opt for working papers, generally to teach English, and these need to be renewed annually. And then there are those who go for “rentista” permits, retiring to Mexico the whole year round, provided they meet the minimum income requirements necessary.

•	There are many reasons why Americans prefer Mexico. The first reason is its closeness to America. This means that the retirees are never really very far away from their families. Legal social security retirement benefits are also there for Americans who live in Mexico. Banking and buying a house a relatively simple affair, thanks to the internet, although houses on the coast and communal lands have special requirements and conditions that have to be met. Food is delicious, simple and affordable. Health care is affordable and cheap too, but Medicare coverage isn’t there in Mexico. Household help is very inexpensive. And last but not least, public transportation is cheap and available widely and in plenty.

On top of all that, retirement communities also include a large number of developments and housing options and arrangements meant for age-specific markets and for people with a wide range of needs and interests. These include private single family homes and apartments allowing for complete independent living, multi story buildings with assisted living facilities and finally, to nursing home care which is medically structured. Some communities might have all three or either one. In the end of the day, it depends on the individual’s health status, costs, the services available, and the amenities and to the extent the individual is capable of caring for himself for a short or long period of time.

Many Americans are seeking out warm, exciting and exotic places to retire. Some are content with states such as Florida or Arizona. These states provide the warm temperatures that retirees are looking for with all the comforts of home. However, for some people, retiring in the United States in not an option. Some adventurous types want to explore outside the borders of the United States. Some people want to travel the world. Others are just a content to settle in on their own little piece of paradise.

This article is going to explain the in and outs of retirement in Mexico. It will be beneficial to those who are just beginning to look into retiring in Mexico as well as those who have been making their plans for year. You will find information on the advantages and disadvantages of retiring in Mexico. As well as some great information on the best towns to live in, places to visit and the cost of living.

The Advantages of Retiring to Mexico

There are many advantages to planning your retirement in Mexico. Some of these advantages may seem a bit obvious and others are a bit more hidden. We’ll start by addressing the more obvious advantages of Mexican retirement.

Climate is one of the greatest advantages of moving to Mexico. While it can get somewhat cool in the winter, the weather is fairly mild and the temperature rarely falls below 70 degrees. While it may be obvious it is important to point out that the further south you go, the warmer the temperatures will be in the winter. There is rarely rain during the winter months.

The rainy season in Mexico is during the summer. The humidity tends to be high. If you love the weather in Florida then you are very likely to fall in love with Mexico’s summer climate as well.

Another advantage of moving to Mexico is that their retirement money seems to reach further. Prices are on the rise in the United States and Canada and most people are trying to get the most bang for their buck. Retiring to Mexico is a great alternative for those who want to retire to a tropical climate, but not have to make many lifestyle changes.

The Disadvantages of Mexican Retirement

The language barrier is one of the disadvantages to retiring in Mexico. If you are well versed in Spanish they you will likely do well in Mexico. Those who know little to know Spanish will find that they may have a hard time communicating. It is important to think about how you will communicate with the doctor, grocer, and postman. You may be wise to take a class to learn or brush up on your Spanish before moving to Mexico.

The process of obtaining the proper paperwork and visa’s to move to Mexico is another disadvantage. This process is not extremely difficult; however, you would be wise to hire an attorney to help you create the documents and file the paperwork the proper way.

Cost of Living

The cost of living in Mexico can be significantly less than the cost of living in the United States of Canada. Housing prices can vary from town to town, but most towns rent and home prices are low. There are some important things that you should factor in when you are considering the cost of living in Mexico.

Water is not safe to drink in Mexico, so you will need to factor in the cost of water. Individual water filtration systems can be expensive. If you do not have one of these systems, you will need to purchase bottled water.

Another thing that you should take into consideration is medical costs. Living in Mexico means that you may on occasion ingest unsanitary water or food. This could result in unforeseen medical expenses for you and your spouse. It can also mean that you may get sick and be unable to enjoy your retirement in Mexico.

You may also want to look into the cost of telephone service in Mexico. You will find that telephone service is very expensive. Telemex is the telephone company in Mexico and they are run by the government. Most people try to avoid using the telephone so that they will not have to pay an extremely high telephone bill.

There are times when the electrical systems can malfunction. These systems are very unreliable. There may be a need for you to have a backup system for electric. This is one of those unforeseen expenses that are incurred when they retire to Mexico.

The Best Places to Live in Mexico

Mazatlan- This city is on the coast. Many retirees are drawn here, because of the laid-back attitude of those who live in the city. Mazatlan is a popular tourist city as well. If you think about a lawn chair in the sand listening to the waves during your retirement then this may be the city for you!

Acapulco- Acapulco offers the best of both worlds. It is a quiet resort town on the Mexican coast; however, there is plenty of city life to keep you entertained. Acapulco has plenty of shops and diners to keep you busy.

San Felipe- If you want to live close to the United States border then San Felipe may be for you. You will find yourself in a town with plenty to do. This town is also just under 3 hours from the border of California.

Cuernavaca- This town offers the true Mexican experience. If you are looking for a traditional Mexican town then you should really consider moving to Cuernavaca. This town is located only 45 minutes from Mexico City. Due to its convenient location, Cuernavaca is one of the most sought after cities to retire to in Mexico.

Barra de Navidad- Barra de Navidad is a quiet costal town. Some want to retire here just to enjoy Mexico without all the tourists. There is a downtown area in Barra de Navidad; however many of the streets are unpaved. This is a great town for people who just want to relax in peace and quiet.

In summary, if you are planning or considering Mexico retirement, consider the countries’ advantages, disadvantages, costs of living and best cities. Arm yourself with plenty of knowledge, then relax and enjoy this fun stage of life to its fullest!
